Sir Nicholas Byron

Houckgeest, Joachim Ottensz.; Sir Nicholas Byron; Newstead Abbey; http://www.artuk.org/artworks/sir-nicholas-byron-47843

Sir Nicholas Byron was born in 1596 at Newstead Abbey in Nottinghamshire. By the late 1630s he was Captain of a Companie of Foote in the regiment of English volunteers fighting against the Habsburgs in the Netherlands and was present at the Siege of Grolle. When the English Civil Wars began, Byron was immediately put at the centre of the King’s military organisation and in 1643 he was made Colonel-General of Cheshire. In March 1648, his home, Gaynes Park in Essex was sequestered by the parliamentarians and he died later that year.
